Lipatti's rendering of Bach's "Jesus, Joy of Man's desiring" was repeatedly admired, both on CD and by online audio clip.
But tonight it was captured surprisingly touching and enchanting when played from a Columbia's 10-inch FC mono lp. The vocal part in the original cantata 147, which was played as incessant marching chords, was gloriously intoned and profoundly expressive, a powerful sound that was previously unheard on any other audio media.
The supporting triplets flow forward in steady pace and soothing peace, so soft and delicate and a bit dark-hued that makes one wonder how Dinu managed to create such big contrast between two melodic lines on the same keyboard. Technique aside, the quality of such singing piano sound makes this transcription by Myra Hess no less religious than the eulogizing psalm presented by choir voices.
Never underestimate vinyls. They are aesthetic magics if we treat them properly and in good faith.
