CIACCONNA, partita II in D min BWV 1004
‘Bach’s Chaconne from the Partita for solo violin in D minor BWV 1004 has enjoyed a quite exceptional destiny, not only in the devotion it has inspired in so many of the finest performers, but also because of the close attention it has received from a number of other composers, among them Brahms, Busoni and Lutz.
This work has acquired a paradoxical status, representing at one and the same time a musical tradition at its most accomplished, and the height of modernity.’ Evelyne Delmas

Edna Stern - a pupil of Krystian Zimerman in Basel, Martha Argerich in Brussells and Leon Fleisher in the USA, and prizewinner of the Juventus Foundation - herself belongs to this to-and-fro between musical tradition and modernity. It was while she was studying basso continuo at the Musik-Akademie in Basel that her improvisation teacher Rudolf Lutz wrote and ultimately dedicated to Edna Stern his 32 variations on Bach’s chaconne.
After we have listened to these transcriptions by three composers and ‘disciples’, Amandine Beyer - holder of a Premier Prix from the Paris Conservatoire on the modern violin, and a soloist’s diploma from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under Chiara Banchini on the Baroque instrument, winner of the First Prize at the Antonio Vivaldi International Violin Competition of Turin, and prizewinner of the Juventus Foundation - offers us a timelessly beautiful interpretation of the original chaconne on Baroque violin.

ZIG-ZAG Territoires collection
ZIG-ZAG Territoires catalogues offers 100 records since nearly 10 years.
We consider our role as record producers to be that of mediators between artists and public. The choice of programmes, venues and sound balance is the result of a constant dialogue with the artists. As the catalogue has grown, the approach to sound recording developed by Franck Jaffrès has become established as one of the label’s hallmarks.
Zig-Zag Territoires wishes to offer along with its CDs - unique objects, halfway between individual craftsmanship and industry - a genuine intellectual and aesthetic complement, through in-depth booklet notes and original artwork by the painter Anne Peultier. It has turned out to be an exciting adventure, enriching the experience of record-making, which becomes an artistic exchange between label, musicians, sound engineer, painter, designer.
We have built the label on artists whom we have succeeded in bringing forward ourselves, such as the harpsichordist Blandine Rannou (complete keyboard works of Rameau, English and French Suites of J. S. Bach, works by Couperin) and on the arrival of artists of international reputation: Ensemble 415 and Chiara Banchini, Anima Eterna et Jos van Immerseel. The values we represented - the capacity to listen to artists, and creativity in graphic design -certainly corresponded precisely to what Jos van Immerseel no longer found with Sony... |
